Run an academy

5 steps to running an academy:

1. “Get Inspired” – TASTER SESSION

Websites and leaflets can only tell you so much. At Romance Academy we’re relational, so we’ve decided to throw FREE taster sessions all over the country so that people can come and find out more. You’ll get the chance to meet the support centre team, ask questions and hopefully feel inspired to join the family that is, Romance Academy. Look out for one of these prestigious events in your area or alternatively, get in touch if you’d like to see one where you are.

2. “Get Trained” – Training Day

To become a Romance Academy leader, you don't HAVE to attend a Taster Session, you might already know what we're about, but you do need to be trained and your organisation*, licenced by us. This involves attending a one day course which, will not only equip you to talk about sex and relationships, but include everything you need to start your own academy.

Costs:

1 organization + 2 people + 1 Licence + 1 Toolkit  + 3 years of online support = £300

Extra trained people = £50 pp

*We are unable to licence anyone who isn't attached or affiliated to an organisation in some way. This is so we can ensure best practice as well as check that the right child protection procedures are in place. If you would like to talk to us further about this, don't hesitate to contact us.

3. “Get Practical” – The Who’s, When’s, Where’s and How’s

Now you’re trained and equipped, it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to make your academy happen.  We’ve written some things to consider in a helpful list. In no particular order:

  • Pick your team.
  • Pick your venue
  • Pick a regular time each week.
  • Fundraise/Assign budget
  • Book Weekend Away
  • Advertise
  • Decide Graduation date
  • Decide recruitment process

4. “Get Recruiting” – Find Your 12

Now comes the most important part, recruiting your chosen 12.  We find that the most effective academies choose 12 complete strangers. This makes it easier for all of the teenagers to start from the same point, especially when it comes to signing the pledge.

Beeston Boys

There are several ways of recruiting, some RA leaders recruit from schools – either through assembly of PSHE lessons or through asking for referrals. You can also draw from your local youth group or seek recommendations from local family planning clinics or social services. There are also leaders who will work predominately with their church youth group.

We would also advise you to ‘audition’ the young people so that they feel like that they have chosen to take part and adds value to the project. They are also likely to commit through this method especially if you don’t leave it too long between first contact and start date. Whichever process you decide to follow, it is important that you consider the dynamic and personalities of the group as a whole and choose wisely.

5. “Get Going” – Start Your Academy

We now declare Romance Academy, XXX open! Let the fun commence…

The first session is all about breaking down barriers and taboos. This may mean that the young people throw every sexual position, slang word or sexual encounter in your face, it might not but it is important that you are consistent and show them that no matter what they say to you, you’re the expert. It’s also critical that every member of the group feels valued so work hard to make sure everyone is included. Above all stay calm, don’t panic and watch as these amazing young people flourish before you.
